Healthy porridge with seasonal berries

Warmer days have arrived but that is no reason to skip a hearty breakfast. Porridge is a healthy recipe that guarantees a good start to the day. It boasts your energy levels while slowly releasing energy throughout the morning. 

Tala's secret to the perfect bowl of porridge is the Tala Porridge Spurtle. The Sputrle or porridge stick dates bacvk to the 15th century and was originally a flat, spatula- like utensil, used for flipping oatcakes on a griddle. Over time, it became dowel shaped and was more specifically used for stirring oatmeal and soups. 

With its characteristic Scottish thistle top, the Spurtle is an ideal way to prevent lumps forming when cooking porridge. The small surface area prevents porridge from sticking to it. 

The annual Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship takes place in the Scottish Highland village of Carrbridge in Cairngorms National Park. Porridge makers from across the globe are invited to compete for the coveted 'Golden Spurtle' trophy.

Serves 2

Ingredients

  • 80g whole rolled porridge oats
  • 200ml semi-skimmed milk
  • 150g mixed berries ( enjoy the seasonal fruits and throw in blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, strawberries)
  • Handful of granola
  • 150 fromage frais

Method

  • Put the oats in a saucepan with the milk and 300ml water.
  • Cook for 3-4 minutes over a low – medium heat, stirring constantly with the Spurtle.
  • Pour into two cereal bowls and top with the mixed berries.
  • Scatter a handful of granola over and serve with the fromage frais.
  • Serve and enjoy the delicious results.
