Making your own homemade spice mixes is a great and simple step to take towards a healthier lifestyle. Not only does it help you avoid the nasty additives in ready-made packaged foods, but it helps you save the pennies too!
We have listed 4 of our favourite spice mix recipes to have on hand for all of your appetising recipes below. We store our mixes in the beautiful Tala Terrine Jars. Perfect for storing out on the counter ready to grab at any time.
Our delicious apple pie spice mix is perfect to complement pies, crumbles and other apple dessert recipes. The Cajun spice mix is great as a dry rub, mixed into mayonnaise, or added into a dressing. Use garam masala in curries and the fajita mix in Mexican dishes. It’s also a wonderful homemade gift idea for Christmas or a birthday celebration.
Ingredients
Cajun

2 Teaspoons Salt
2 Teaspoons Garlic Powder
2 ½ Teaspoons Paprika
1 Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
1 Teaspoon Onion Powder
1 Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
Apple Pie

4 Tablespoons Cinnamon
1 Tablespoon All Spice
2 Teaspoons Nutmeg
2 Teaspoons Ginger
2 Teaspoons Ground Cardamom
Fajita

1 Tablespoon Chilli Powder
1 ½ Teaspoons Cumin
1 Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
1 Teaspoon Salt
½ Teaspoon Smoked Paprika
½ Teaspoon Garlic Powder
½ Teaspoon Onion Powder
Garam Masala
2 Tablespoons Coriander Seeds
1 Tablespoon Cumin Seeds
2 Teaspoons Black Peppercorn
2 Teaspoons Ground Cinnamon
1 Teaspoon Cardamom Seeds
1 Teaspoon Fennel Seeds
½ Teaspoon Whole Cloves
4 Dried Bay Leaves

Method - Garam Masala
1. Firstly, toast the whole spices in a small pan until they are aromatic. Make sure they have turned a shade or two darker before mixing the rest of the ingredients in.
2. Use a pestle and mortar to grind the whole spices. Add the ready ground spices and dried herbs. Crush this to a fine powder. Add the spices to your Tala Lever Arm Terrine Jar. Store in a sealed jar for up to six months. Double the ingredients, if you have a larger jar.
3. Use brown tags for your jars, before sticking on the Tala Preserving Labels. Stamp on the labels using alphabet stamps and a black ink pad or alternatively write on them. Tie the labels to the jar using brown string. These will make the perfect gift for Christmas or a birthday celebration.
Method - Fajita, Apple Pie and Cajun
1. Using a bowl, put the ready ground spices in. Mix together using a wooden spoon. Add the spices to your Tala Lever Arm Terrine Jar. Store in a sealed jar for up to six months. Double the ingredients, if you have a larger jar.
2. Use brown tags for your jars, before sticking on the Tala Preserving Labels. Stamp on the labels using alphabet stamps and a black ink pad or alternatively write on them. Tie the labels to the jar using brown string. These will make the perfect gift for Christmas or a birthday celebration.
