Personalised BBQ Sauce Recipe

Sweet and smoky, with a spicy kick reminiscent of Middle Eastern Shakshouka, this sauce tastes divine with burgers, but also works beautifully as a chutney at an improvised lunch with crusty bread, cold meats, cheeses and salad. If you or a loved one in your life loves BBQ and is always searching for BBQ food ideas, this BBQ sauce is the perfect store cupboard staple. Summer is approaching, as are lots of lovely bank holiday weekends, this is a great recipe for a summer picnic or BBQ. 

This recipes yield at least three jars of BBQ sauce, so you can justifiably keep one back for yourself! 

  • Red pepper, deseeded and chopped
  • 1kg tomatoes, chopped
  • 500g red onions (or 6 small-medium red onions), chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 fresh bird's eye chili, deseeded and chopped
  • 1 dsp cumin seeds
  • 1 dsp mustard seeds
  • 150ml red wine vinegar
  • 150g demerara sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 dsp smoked paprika
  • Piece of fresh ginger (thumb size), peeled and finely chopped


Prep time: 30 minutes

Cooking time: 60 minutes

1. Place the cumin seeds and mustard seeds into the small saucepan and heat gently for a few minutes to release the flavours. Place all of the ingredients, including the toasted seeds, into the large casserole dish and mix thoroughly with the wooden spoon

2. Place the casserole dish over a low heat and stir from time to time. When the mixture starts to bubble, cover the dish and stir from time to time.

3. After around an hour, the sauce will be sticky and shiny, and won't separate when stirred which means that it is ready. Pour the mixture into sterilised jars and label.

To increase the 'spice factor' try adding an extra bird's eye chili, or for someone with a very sweet tooth, some mango will add a touch of sweetness.
