Treat your Mum this Mothers Day

French Toast

This Mother's Day, why not treat Mum to breakfast in bed and make her these lovely French toast hearts? Super easy to make - this recipe requires no specialist equipment other than the Tala heart-shape cookie cutter set. Well worth investing in, the cutter set is useful for shaping biscuit dough, sugar paste for cake decorating, sponge cake, pancakes, marzipan and a wealth of other foods  and of course, heart-shaped French Toast!

Serve French Toast warm with Greek Yoghurt, fresh raspberries and maple syrup for a very special Mother's Day breakfast. The added bonus of this breakfast is that there are lots of left-over cut-out remnants for the rest of the family to enjoy with maple syrup! Yum!

Ingredients

2 free-range eggs

200ml semi-skimmed milk

1/4 tsp mixed spice

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp sugar

Preparation time: 20 minutes

Cooking time: 20 minutes

1. Place egg, milk, vanilla, mixed spice and sugar in the mixing bowl and whisk. Then transfer the mixture to a wide shallow bowl.

2. Cut several slices of bread (5-7mm thick) and put as many into the egg mixture as will comfortably fit -- this may be only one or two slices.Turn the slices now and then so they are completely saturated with the mixture.

3. While the bread is soaking, place the frying pan over a low heat. Add 1 teaspoon of oil and allow the pan to become sizzling hot before adding the bread, frying for at least 5 minutes on each size before flipping.

4. Transfer the slices to a chopping board and cut out heart shapes. Arrange the hearts on a pretty plate and serve with Greek yoghurt, fresh raspberries, maple syrup and fresh orange juice.

Tips:

  • For a tasty low fat and low sugar breakfast, substitute sugar for sweetener, oil for one-calorie cooking spray and use fat-free Greek yoghurt.
  • Try other Tala cookie cutters if you prefer flower- or animal-shaped French Toast.
  • To keep the French toast warm while you finish cooking, wrap finished French Toast hearts in foil and place in the oven at 120 degree Celsius until needed.
