Dipped and Decorated Halloween Oreo Pops

Dipped and Decorated Halloween Oreo Pops

This yummy Halloween treat can be made with any kind of shop-bought sandwich cookie or you can make your own cookies. If you want to bake from scratch, take a look at our very own home-made oreo recipe here.  I recommend working with candy melts (also known as candy buttons) rather than chocolate because they come in a variety of bright colours and can be melted and re-melted many times without needing to be tempered, as chocolate would need to be.

Ingredients

Sandwich cookies

Candy melts, various colours

Black ready to roll icing (plus other colours if needed)

Icing sugar

Equipment

Baking Tray

Baking Parchment

Tala Skewers

Small Microwavable Container

Spatula

Tala Disposable Piping Bags

Tala Small Rolling Pin

Icing Sugar Shaker

Small Sharp Knife

METHOD

  1. Line a baking tray with baking parchment.

  2. Take the pointed end of a kebab stick and insert between the two cookies of the sandwich cookie. Place the cookies on the baking tray and chill while you see to the candy melts.

  3. Pour a quantity of candy melts into the microwave-proof container and melt in the microwave as per the packet instructions. (Short bursts on a low setting seem to be the most straightforward method.) Stir with a mini palette knife until smooth.

  4. Dip the impaled cookie into the molten candy melts and cover them completely. You can use the mini palette knife to spread the melts over any cracks. If you can see the cookie through the melts (this is likely with lighter coloured candy melts) you might like to apply a second coat. Lay the cookie on the baking tray to harden before dipping again.

  5. Allow the melt-covered cookies to solidify, then pipe on details such as mouths and eyes with more candy melts that have been melted and transferred to a Tala disposable piping bag.

  6. For bigger features, such as witches hats, ears and horns, roll out a small amount of black ready to roll icing and cut out the shapes with a small sharp knife. Secure in place with a very small amount of water. (Follow the same procedure for any other small shapes you might like to make, for example, pink for cat's noses, yellow for monster eyes...)

  7. Store the cookie pops in a tin until needed.

Tips:

  • Choose candy melts in Halloween colours such as orange, black, green and purple.
  • If you want dipped and decorated cookies without sticks, remove the sticks after dipping but before decorating, so the stick doesn't stick fast inside the cookie.
  • If you keep the sticks, be sure to supervise young children.
