150ml lukewarm water

25g vegetable spread

245g strong white bread flour

60g cheddar cheese, grated

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon caster sugar

¾ teaspoon fast-action dried yeast

½ garlic powder

Few tbsp milk



  1. In a large bowl, with the help of a fork, mix the yeast, the sugar and the water. Add the vegetable spread, flour and salt. Knead the dough for 10-15 mins, if you do it by hand, or 3-4 mins if using an electric mixer.
  2. Add the garlic powder and cheese and knead until incorporated.
  3. Leave the dough to prove for 2 hours or until it has doubled in size.
  4. Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces.
  5. Roll each piece into a rope about 30 cm long then shape it like a heart.
  6. Place the heart rolls on a large baking tray, covered with greaseproof baking paper.
  7. Leave to prove for 30 mins.
  8. Brush the rolls with some milk.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas mark 7 for about 18 mins or until golden.
